We know that traditionally there is a tendency to make capital out of discoveries and we frequently find that a nationalistic note or Euro centric approach, which neither we nor the promoters of the Genoa exhibition would envisage, tends to creep into celebrations and commemorations of this kind.

Seville will host the universal exhibition on the period of discovery and Genoa the special international exhibition on 'Ships and the Sea' not in competition therefore but complementary to one another, and this will have also to be reflected in the joint organization of initiatives, events and encounters.

Of course, as your rapporteur I understand these views and for that very reason I recommend, in the statement of the grounds on which the motion for a resolution is based, and in the motion itself, that they should not be omitted from mention where appropriate or from being included in the Genoa exhibition.

The second aspect consists in the fact that all round the exhibition there is developing, practically without interruption, what is today in Genoa the largest and most extensive historical centre in existence in Europe, and therefore the world, which bears the signs of the historical stratification of the city but also of its many current problems.

To conclude, the five hundreth anniversary of the Columbus enterprise can and must, in my view, be interpreted in Genoa and Seville as an important opportunity for discovering afresh relation ships between peoples and continents, but it must also represent for Europe an opportunity for rediscovering itself, its own past as well as the role it can and must play in the future.

For those reasons too, there is no point raising again past controversies that have already been laid to rest, nor are we helped by a blinkered vision wich fails to focus on the coming together of differing origins and culture, proposing again, now as in the past, a universal view of the problems. I am convinced that Genoa and Italy will approach in that spirit the Colombus celebrations and organize the exhibition accordingly, and that Seville and Spain will do the same.
