The excavated specimen was most likely a young adult.

The paratype is specimen IVPP V818, a skull roof.

The first named specimen of Rhamphorhynchus , was brought to the attention of Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring by the collector Georg Graf zu Münster in 1825. von Soermmerring concluded that it belonged to an ancient bird.

The skull of the type specimen, exhibits a mosaic of both ancestral and derived theropod characteristics.

The holotype is the mandible, specimen MLP 118 (Museo de La Plata).

History and description The partial braincase that became the type specimen of Piveteausaurus was first described in 1923 by French paleontologist Jean Piveteau in illustrations and photographs of the specimen (MNHN 1920 7).

In August 2007, an albino specimen was photographed off South West Rocks, Australia.

In 1970 John Ostrom described the type specimen and gave it its formal name.

The type specimen of Ornithocheirus simus is represented only by a broken piece of the upper jaw tip.

The skull of the type specimen is 20.7 centimeters long (8.25 in), and the femur is 22.3 cm (8.75 in) in length.

It was found in 1992 in the south of France, in Provence, and is known only from a few bones.

The type species of Rhamphorhynchus is R. longicaudus its type specimen or holotype also was sold to the Teylers Museum, where it still resides as TM 6924.

The holotype, or original specimen, consists of only a maxilla (upper jaw bone), and a dentary (lower jaw bone), both from the left side of the same individual.

It cannot be determined whether or not the Cleveland Lloyd specimen represents a fully mature adult, so the upper size limit for the taxon remains unknown.
