Holding down the Ctrl key allows you to select individual items holding down the Shift key allows you to select consecutive items, while clicking with the LMB .

If you hold the Shift key down while using the arrow keys the selection will move to the start or end of the block of occupied cells.

A second method of controlling the magnification is to use the zoom tool. This is available on the Tools toolbar. This tool can be used in two ways.
