In many cases, waste water is discharged into rivers without any treatment, making both surface water and groundwater unusable and harmful.

I intervened with the Irish Government because it cared more fot the British environment than the British Government did.

Sewage often pollutes the ocean.

As normal areas do not require specific protection, only secondary treatment is required for waste water discharges into these areas.

It should not be accelerated but, frankly, the important role that the European Parliament has always played in institutional reforms convinces me that the opportunities afforded by the two interinstitutional pre conferences you have organized will be taken to remind each of the government representatives, including the delegations I was referring to just now, that there are moments in history when actions have to be matched to words.

We'd have a water treatment system treating wastewater, turning that into fresh water and generating energy from the solids using just plants and micro organisms.

As the waste water of several agglomerations74 is treated in two or more waste water treatment plants, the number of plants (143) differs from the number of the agglomerations (134).

The Commission would also point out that the Community directives on water management, together with the draft directives on nitrates from non point sources and waste water treatment plants and the planned draft directive on the ecological quality of water, should make it possible to bring about a considerable reduction in the pollution from land sources and thus safeguard the various marine species at risk.

(IT) Mr President, Mr President in Office, ladies and gentlemen, I am speaking on behalf of the European Parliament's ad hoc delegation which last week visited a number of countries directly involved in the crisis we are discussing, a delegation which I had the honour of chairing on behalf of this Parliament's Enlarged Bureau and which also included MM Bonetti, Cheysson, Crampton and Moorhouse.

The proposal for a directive on the treatment of urban effluent is now being adopted by the Council of Ministers and another proposal on nitrate pollution is being considered by the Council. These two proposals have favourable implications in respect of phosphate pollution.
